More About the Author

Karma Yeshe Rabgye is a Western Buddhist Monk in the Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Originally from England, he now lives in Ashoka Buddhist Temple, Khuda Ali Sher, Northern India, where he teaches Buddhism and meditation classes to people of all ages.

He initially came to India as a student of Buddhism, learning from the great Tibetan Buddhist masters in exile. His Western background forced him to question some difficult elements of the teachings, in particular to distinguish those teachings that were essential aspects of the path from those that were mere cultural embellishments. He found that many people who were attracted to Buddhist teachings, particularly Westerners, were confused by the teachings, and wanted to bypass the foundation teachings of Gautama Buddha to instead perilously dive into advanced teachings such as Tantra. This lead him to write 'The Best Way to Catch a Snake' and 'Life's Meandering Path,' which both offer practical advice on approaching Gautama Buddha's teachings for both beginners and seasoned practitioners alike.

Karma Yeshe Rabgye spent several years in a monastery in the foothills of the Himalayas teaching young monks basic Buddhist philosophy and meditation. He now offers teachings freely to all in a manner that is unpretentious and clear. He does not demand students to blindly accept what he says, but instead invites them to examine their own minds and experience to discover the validity of Gautama Buddha's teaching. Using everyday examples he has the ability to bring the teachings alive, particularly to a younger audience seeking to make Buddhism relevant in their lives. His approachable manner has attracted many students who appreciate his sense of humour and practical advice.

Karma Yeshe Rabgye quietly demonstrates Gautama Buddha's teaching on compassion through the charitable trust 'Sangye Menla' that he founded in 2008 in Chandigarh, Northern India. The trust provides medical assistance and care to people from the Himalayan region in India.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth a read 11 Nov. 2014
By Bruce
Format:Paperback
I found this book very easy and enjoyable to read coming as I do from a non-religious perspective.
The daily suggestions for contemplation on each principle are a little simplistic but for a complete novice on the spiritual path, with no previous knowledge of Buddhism or any kind of spiritual reflection, it is a good starting point as any I guess.
The choice of basing a book on the thirty eight principles covered in the Mangala Sutra was excellent as was the intention to extrapolate it for a secular audience. The author has made a very good job of providing clear and concise explanations of the principles and interpreting their meanings, including the linking in of other sutras into the discussions - particularly Lord Buddha's core teachings (The Four Noble Truths, The Noble Eightfold Path along with other basic precepts and concepts). I also strongly support his advice to incorporate daily reflections into one's life to assist in one's personal spiritual development.
Overall, well worth a read if you are interested in personal spiritual growth without the baggage of subscribing to religious worship.
If you like this type of book, another book recently published that I would also recommend is 'A Lay-Buddhist's Take on Life and the Modern World' by Ann O'Bodhi, which is also aimed at spiritual growth for people not interested in religious worship.

5.0 out of 5 stars A practical guide for the spiritual but not religious 23 Oct. 2014
By Stan Boods - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Karma Yeshe Rabgye's 'Meandering Path' does not take us to obscure mystical destinations or promise us salvation in some religious belief. Instead it leads us to accept our human condition and act more skillfully to reduce the suffering we create. What I liked about the book was that it provides practical tools for change in the form of daily reviews and contemplations that build minfulness and awareness of the thoughts and actions that we need to reform to live a more sane and peaceful life. You don't need to be religious to benefit from this book, as the author states it's a spiritual practice that relates to personal inner experience not to religious faith or belief. The book really is a breath of fresh air without any religious mumbo jumbo you find in many books of this genre. It is written in clear simple language with honest examples from the author's life, highly recommended!

Apparently you can't post unless you review. I read this book, and am reading it again, and will likely read it again. It's a good foundational approach for someone interested in the more secular aspects of buddhism.

A great overview of the range and depth of psychological diligence required of those embracing the dharma. If you want to know what Buddhist mindfulness really involves, read this book.
4.0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile but difficault 7 Jan. 2015
By Dave Murray - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is quite valuable and his advice for a daily review and reflection is worthy of action. I have it 4, rather than 5 stars because I found it to be a difficult read and suspect that many readers will not finish it.

It is a comprehensive study of the Mangala Sutra. The trouble is that it could have been a shorter book without loss. I'm glad that I read it and plan to print out a concise Mangala Sutra for reflection on my own actions.

A bit too wordy, but worthwhile.
